Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Majority Whip Jim Clyburn Announcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 18, 2022) — Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) issued the following statement on House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn’s decision to step down from his current position as House Majority Whip while continuing to serve in Democratic leadership:

“Like Speaker Pelosi, Majority Whip Clyburn has led a barrier-breaking, truly inspirational career in public service. Upon his first election to Congress, Clyburn became the first Black person to represent South Carolina since Reconstruction.

“As Majority Whip, Clyburn fostered unity in our Caucus, helping House Democrats overcome narrow majorities to pass crucial components of our legislative agenda. Many of our recent legislative victories, including the historic Inflation Reduction Act, wouldn’t have been possible without him.

“By taking a step back from his current leadership role, Clyburn will play a key part in building the next generation of House Democratic leaders. I commend his decision to pass the torch and look forward to serving alongside him in the next Congress.”
