Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on President Zelenskyy and the Ongoing War in Ukraine

Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman issued the following statement regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine:

"I want to express my continued support and deep admiration for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people. Their unwavering courage in the face of relentless Russian aggression has been nothing short of extraordinary.

This latest Ukrainian drone operation, personally supervised by President Zelenskyy, struck a devastating blow to the Russian war machine - but it also exposed the arrogance and shortsightedness of those who have tried to dismiss him and his country’s resilience. That includes Donald Trump and JD Vance, who, just months ago, sat in the Oval Office and had the audacity to tell Zelenskyy that he “didn’t have the cards.” Well, the world sees who holds the cards now, and it’s not the men coddling Putin while undermining our democratic allies.

I stand with Ukraine, with a sovereign democracy defending itself from invasion, and with President Zelenskyy, whose leadership is a study in perseverance and unshakeable patriotism.

Contrast that with the reckless bravado we’ve seen from the Trump administration. In the meantime, Ukraine has shown the world what it means to fight a war not just with drones and missiles, but with principle and purpose.

Time and again, Donald Trump has demonstrated a dangerous deference to Vladimir Putin. He withheld critical military aid to Ukraine when they needed it most, and he has never missed an opportunity to downplay or deflect Russia’s crimes. His administration’s treatment of Ukraine, reducing their struggle to a political bargaining chip, is downright disrespectful.

President Zelenskyy is right to demand pressure - diplomatic, economic, and military on the Russian regime. Ending this war is about accountability. It’s about protecting innocent lives and about defending the values that should still mean something in our own country: democracy, sovereignty, and freedom from tyranny.

I will continue to support necessary aid to Ukraine: both military and humanitarian. We must follow through on our commitment and we must not send the message to autocrats around the world that America’s promises can be bartered away by ego or political convenience. We are better than that."
