Watson Coleman Statement On Trump Administration Ending Temporary Protected Status for 60,000 Haitians

Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s decision on ending the Temporary Protected Status of 60,000 Haitians:

“The failure to renew the Temporary Protected Status of some 60,000 human lives is a further continuation of the downward spiral of indecent leadership from this Administration. Congress created the TPS program to ensure we uphold our values by not deporting individuals to places that are unsafe due to instability or natural disasters. The 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti continues to leave the island unrecognizable and destabilized the country’s economy, making adequate housing, healthcare and employment unattainable for millions of Haitians, while recent hurricanes have only worsened conditions in the country. Sending these individuals back at this time is inhumane both to them and their 27,000 U.S.-born children.

America is the nation that the world looks to in the darkest of hours. We are one of the greatest superpowers the world has ever known. Yet that reputation and world renowned leadership becomes more tarnished with each despicable act of human indecency this Administration pursues.

America is better than this, but clearly this Administration is not.”
