Watson Coleman Statement on Republicans’ Second Attempt at a Sham Impeachment
Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) announced her intent to vote against a resolution impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
This is the second attempt to impeach the Secretary in as many weeks. Last week, House Republicans failed to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. They had attempted to time their vote for a period in which enough House Democrats were absent that they could pass the resolution with a one-vote majority. Instead, Democrats stood united (and were joined by three dissenting Republicans) to vote down the preposterous impeachment effort.
Congresswoman Watson Coleman issued a statement ahead of the vote:
“Groundhog Day was two weeks ago. Yet, here we are once again voting on a sham impeachment resolution whose entire goal is to distract the American people from House Republicans’ utter failure to govern because they don’t have any legislative proposals that are popular with or meet the needs of the American people.
“Instead of passing legislation to address mass shootings, lower prices for working families, or secure access to mental health resources, they’ve proposed yet again to impeach Secretary Mayorkas for no other reason than to score political points against President Biden ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
“This was a directive by their party leader, 4-time indicted former President, Donald Trump. With less than three weeks until another government shutdown deadline, House Republicans are wasting yet another legislative day attempting to deliver for Trump instead of working for the American People.
“As I did last week, I’ll be voting against this measure.”
