Watson Coleman Statement on Attempted Terror Attack at NY Port Authority Bus Terminal

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswomen Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), released the following statement following reports of a pipe bomb explosion in the passageway connecting the Times Square and Port Authority subway:

“This morning’s attempted terror attack at the Port Authority bus terminal is just another example of the dire need for immediate and comprehensive investment in security across all modes of transportation. Transit centers -  like the Port Authority Bus Terminal – are a vital part of their livelihood for millions of American commuters, train and station operators, and local businesses. Prioritizing their safety and security is paramount; government must work collaboratively across all levels to ensure our agencies have the resources and tools necessary to mitigate attack and prevent tragedy.”

Last month, Watson Coleman introduced the Surface Transportation and Public Area Security Act of 2017. If enacted, the legislation would restore, revamp, and resource important programs aimed at securing critical soft targets, such as railroads, buses and the public areas of airports. The bill would also greatly enhance federal partnership with state and local stakeholders to protect these vital transit systems and the people who use them. Watson Coleman announced plans to introduce the legislation at a field hearing in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District held by the Subcommittee on Transportation and Protective Security of the Committee on Homeland Security.
