Watson Coleman Announces 2019 Congressional App Challenge Launch
Washington, DC (July 15, 2019) – Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman is excited to announce that her office will be participating in the Congressional App Challenge, an app competition for students in middle and high schools across the country. Students who reside or attend school within New Jersey’s 12th district are eligible to compete.
“The Congressional App Challenge is a great opportunity for students to showcase their creative abilities within the world of STEM education,” said Watson Coleman. “I am looking forward to seeing the innovative ideas that students bring to the forefront of this year’s challenge.”
We strongly encourage the participation of all students, regardless of their skill level or previous coding experience. The Challenge is an excellent opportunity to introduce more students into the world of STEM. It is estimated that the U.S. economy is likely to be short by as many as a million programmers by the year 2020. This will exclude many from the opportunity of securing these high-paying, high-demand jobs. We must continue to invest in our youth through programs such as the Congressional App Challenge, in order to encourage students to pursue these skills and recognize them for their efforts.
Winners of the challenge will be selected by a panel of judges from New Jersey’s 12th district and honored by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman. Their apps are also eligible to be displayed within the U.S. Capitol building, on house.gov, and the Congressional App Challenge website.
The Challenges’ submission portal is now open. The CAC accepts computer programs (or apps) written in any programming language, for any platform (desktop/PC, web, mobile, raspberry Pi, etc). Students are encouraged to register online here by September 10th before submitting their app by November 1st. The competition is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience.
