Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Supreme Court Decision Upending Chevron Deference
Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) issued a statement regarding the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision in Loper Bright v. Raimondo.
The ruling overturns 40 years of established precedent — known as Chevron deference — that allowed nonpartisan civil servants to regulate industries and ensure the goods and services provided to the American public are safe for consumption.
Rep. Watson Coleman issued the following statement:
“Yet again the Supreme Court’s right-wing extremist majority has obliterated decades of precedent, and bestowed on itself new policymaking authority.
“This ruling makes it easier for corporations to poison the water we drink, pollute the air we breathe, and destroy the planet we all call home. It makes it harder for the nonpartisan policy experts and career civil servants who regulate industries from food service, to pharmaceuticals, to airlines and automobiles, to do their jobs and keep us all safe. This decision will touch every aspect of American life.
“This decision is a favor to the same class of wealthy corporate interests that have been flying Justices around on their private jets, inviting them on their yacht cruises, and paying for their lavish vacations at luxury resorts — this is the kind of decision they were paying for.
“We must consider any and all options to reform the Supreme Court, including establishing an enforceable code of ethics and expanding the number of justices. Because right now, the Court is held captive by a majority of bought-and-paid-for right wing extremists."
