Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Passage of Sanctions Legislation

Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 3364 - legislation sanctioning Russia, Iran, and North Korea, as well as constraining President Donald Trump's power to ease or end penalties against Vladimir Putin's government:

“The passage of this major and critical legislation reveals the true nature of bipartisanship that has been sorely missing here in Washington.

Today, despite this President’s attempts to weaken and undermine this bill, my colleagues here in the House of Representatives can agree that we must protect the integrity of our democracy and the security of the United States and our allies around the globe. It’s been unclear whether this President shares these concerns, but our work must continue. We have a constitutional responsibility as a coequal branch of government to provide a check on the executive branch; this bill reaffirms that duty.

It is in the best interest of the American people that we rein in this President’s authority to unilaterally lift sanctions on Russia, especially while so many questions remain unanswered about his troubling relationship with a known foreign adversary.”
