Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on House Republican Vote to Gut Medicaid and Cut Taxes for Billionaire Donors
Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) issued the following statement after House Republicans voted to advance a budget that cuts Medicaid, raises healthcare costs for working families, and lays the groundwork for trillions of dollars in tax cuts for billionaire GOP donors:
“This budget is a huge rip off for working families across America. It lays the groundwork to cut funding for Medicaid, nutrition assistance, consumer protections, and much more - all in the name of forcing through trillions of dollars in tax cuts for the Republicans’ billionaire donors.
“Let me be clear: this budget is shameful. It takes from the most vulnerable and gives to the most wealthy. It rips away healthcare from children, seniors, veterans, and the poor. Republicans are betraying their constituents, millions of whom will be worse off because of this budget.
“In New Jersey alone, 700,000 people stand to lose their health insurance if this budget is enacted. In my district, the 32,000 people who receive coverage under the Affordable Care Act would see their average premium go up by $1,440 per year — a 57% increase.
“This is a raw deal for working people. It’s a huge gift to the ultra wealthy donors who have successfully bought off the Republican Party. My Democratic colleagues and I will continue fighting tooth and nail to ensure this budget resolution is never adopted fully into law.”
