Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Failure of Reconciliation Bill in Budget Committee
Today, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), a member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Republican budget proposal failed to advance out of the committee:
“In yet another display of Republican chaos and incompetence, the GOP failed to pass their reconciliation bill because it wasn’t cruel enough for their own members.
“This proposal would kick 13.7 million Americans off their health insurance in order to pay for $3.8 trillion in tax cuts predominantly for the wealthy and large corporations. And even after stripping healthcare from all those people this measure would still add at least $2.5 trillion to the deficit.
“This is a betrayal of working families by Trump, Congressional Republicans, and their billionaire donors, who are desperate for this measure to go through so they can get even richer.
“The American people have been clear: they do not want cuts to Medicaid. But Republicans don’t seem to care. They’re hellbent on trying to jam through an unpopular budget proposal that only benefits their wealthy donors.
“I strongly encourage my colleagues across the aisle to protect and not attack working families just trying to make ends meet. This budget is a giveaway for the rich, what we need is relief for working class Americans.”
