Rep. Watson Coleman Rallies Support for Passage of Voting Rights Legislation

Following President Biden’s remarks in Georgia demanding progress on voting rights legislation, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) urged Senators to do whatever it takes – including changing their rules – to get these key bills over the finish line. The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would ensure every American has equal freedom to vote and make their voice heard in our democracy.

“The Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are essential for securing our sacred right to vote,” said Watson Coleman. “As Republicans seek to push our country toward authoritarianism, the future of American democracy itself is uncertain. For that reason, it’s crucial that we set basic national standards for voting, protect against election subversion, stop partisan gerrymandering and ensure that the people – not dark money groups – choose who represents them.

“Republican obstruction has repeatedly proven that current Senate rules must be changed to ensure the institution delivers on the will of the American people. We cannot allow an outdated procedure to get in the way of securing the people’s most fundamental right.”
