Rep. Watson Coleman Announces Grants to District Housing Authorities to Prepare and Respond to Coronavirus
Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, announced that several cities in the 12th Congressional District received important Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grants to support preventing, preparing and responding to the Coronavirus Pandemic in public housing.
The grants include:
- $1,425,255 awarded to the Trenton Housing Authority.
- $260,050 awarded to the Plainfield Housing Authority.
- $22,737 awarded to the Franklin Housing Authority.
- $39,134 awarded to the Hightstown Housing Authority
“We’ve seen the coronavirus have a disproportionate impact on lower income families and neighborhoods,” said Watson Coleman. “Some lower-income cities have seen 3-4 times the rate of cases as neighboring towns. Underinvestment in public housing over decades has contributed to lower health outcomes for residents and higher rates of coronavirus in our public housing units. These HUD grants will help to decrease the severity of future outbreaks.”
