Watson Coleman: Same-Sex Couples Should Have the Constitutional Right to Marry
Following the announcement late Friday that the United States Supreme Court will review four cases from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee, in the only federal appellate court circuit to uphold a ban on same-sex marriage, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12) issued the following statement:
“There are 36 states that already grant marriage rights to our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. Considering also the federal recognition of same-sex marriages through the landmark court case of the United States v Windsor, we cannot ask committed couples and their children to wait any longer.
As we commemorate the late Martin Luther King Jr, it is critical to remember the civil rights activists who have shaped change throughout our country’s history. We must secure these rights and continue the progress of equality for all citizens so that all couples, regardless of orientation, can be recognized and protected under law. I applaud all those fighting on behalf of this cause, and urge the Supreme Court to recognize the importance of this historic moment in ensuring liberty and justice for all.”
