Rep. Watson Coleman Statement on Administration Plans for DAPA, DACA

Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, Vice Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on news from the Administration that it has rescinded the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program and plans to preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“The Administration’s announcement that it is rescinding DAPA reflects the President’s inhumane immigration policies where fear is prioritized over families. American immigration policy has long recognized the fundamental value in keeping families together, and DAPA was a continuation of this consensus. Unfortunately, this President continues to violate the norms on which our nation is based.

“I am relieved that Secretary Kelly has indicated that DACA will remain in place for now after recognizing the broad bipartisan support from the American public to protect DREAMers. Going forward, Congress must continue to be vigilant in ensuring the Trump Administration keeps its commitment to these young people and ultimately must act legislatively to pass comprehensive immigration reform, so we do not have to rely on the erratic decisions of this President.”
