Happy New Year!

It’s Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman with another monthly update on our work in Washington, D.C. and back home in New Jersey. 2017 was a year full of trials and tribulations as we resist the rollback of our American values from the Trump Administration. This administration has attempted to implement a discriminatory Muslim ban, roll back crucial environmental protections, undo necessary financial regulations, strip healthcare from millions, and pass a tax cut for billionaires and multinational corporations, among other dangerous policies. While the president has succeeded in implementing too many of these, thanks to resistance by the American people, we have been able to limit some of the damage. There is no doubt that 2018 will be just as challenging, and it will be crucial for all of us to remain awake, alert, and ready to mobilize to combat these injustices.

The GOP Tax Scam

From coast to coast, Americans across this country are angry, rightfully so, because Trump and Congressional Republicans have robbed from generations of middle class families to further enrich themselves, millionaires and powerful corporations. Instead of working with Democrats to reform our tax code, Republicans chose to rush through a partisan giveaway to the rich and powerful that adds $1.5 trillion to the deficit and increases the number of uninsured by 13 million. Republicans have made clear they plan to use these deficits to create a manufactured crisis where they have an excuse to cut vital social programs that seniors and low-income Americans rely on such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

Additionally, this bill is a brazen attack on New Jersey. By limiting the state and local tax deduction (SALT), it subjects New Jerseyans to double taxation, devastates property values, and puts state and local budgets at risk, and the communities I represent would be among the hardest hit in the entire nation. Republicans are so shameless in this tax scam that their meager benefits for individuals are set to expire, while their most generous tax breaks for businesses are permanent, leaving my constituents and future generations holding the bag for years to come on this heartless scheme. Trickle down economics is simply a false dream that Republicans have been selling America’s middle class families. We have been waiting for decades for Republicans to show us the jobs and increased wages that Reagan’s and Bush’s tax cuts were supposed to produce. In fact, Bush’s tax cuts sent us into the worst economic recession this country has ever seen.

8.8 Million Healthier Americans

Despite the misinformation and “alternative facts” coming from Trump and his allies, Obamacare is not dead. While Congressional Republicans aid and abet Trump in a never ending attack on the American people’s healthcare — the American people continue to show their resilience. The American people are loudly and clearly demanding that access to healthcare remain their right — I could not agree more! Despite the Trump Administration gutting outreach, weekend blackouts of website, and the cutting of the enrollment period in half, the Affordable Care Act’s Open Enrollment period saw approximately 8.8 million people gain access to healthcare. Healthcare must remain a right. The American people are demanding it, and I will continue to be a fearless advocate and defender of that right.

Fighting For Net Neutrality

The Federal Communications Commission’s decision to roll back Net Neutrality protections is the latest example of how the Trump Administration and their allies continue to strip away consumer protections with consequences that powerful corporations and our nation’s wealthy will never experience. Granting multi-billion-dollar broadband companies the legal power to block content from competitors, slow video-streaming services from rivals, and charge businesses and consumers more in special “fast lanes” is about as anti-consumer and anti-small business as it gets. There are Americans living in what has been described as the digital age that still do not have access to the internet, a burden disproportionately borne by communities of color and rural residents – a disparity only exacerbated by this decision.

Rest assured, I am pursuing all possible actions to protect Net Neutrality. I believe firmly that Congress should use the Congressional Review Act to reverse the FCC’s vote and restore Net Neutrality protections.

Strengthening American Transit

The attack on the Port Authority bus terminal is just another example of the dire need for immediate and comprehensive investment in security across all modes of transportation. Transit centers - like the Port Authority Bus Terminal – are a vital part of their livelihood for millions of American commuters, train and station operators, and local businesses. Prioritizing their safety and security is paramount; government must work collaboratively across all levels to ensure our agencies have the resources and tools necessary to mitigate attack and prevent tragedy.

Incidents such as this are exactly why I introduced the Surface Transportation and Public Area Security Act of 2017. We must give transit agencies the resources and tools they need to enhance security and commuters nationwide the assurances of safety they deserve.

Protecting The Export-Important Bank

I have said from the very beginning that the voters of New Jersey rejected Scott Garrett and so should the Senate, and I am pleased they did so. In rejecting the nomination of Scott Garrett to lead the Export-Import Bank of the United States, senators - both Democrats and Republicans, alike – affirm how damaging his leadership would be to this vital agency. Throughout his tenure in Congress, Mr. Garrett led the charge to oppose the Export-Import Bank, so it defied logic that he would ever be considered to lead the Bank with the opportunity to sabotage it from with.

NRA Comes First For Republicans

By passing The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, Congressional Republicans made it abundantly clear to the American public and law enforcement community that safety and security comes second to their pledges to the NRA. This bill allows people — including those with dangerous histories — to carry hidden, loaded guns anywhere across the country.

This month marked the fifth anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In those five years we have prayed for thousands of friends and family members while shooting after shooting has stolen the lives of innocent Americans. Instead of honoring their lives with action to prevent more senseless deaths, my Republican colleagues memorialized their deaths by passing a bill that would increase the risk of this happening in our communities. There are so many different pieces of legislation that could help curb this epidemic, such as my Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act or universal background checks, but Republicans remain complacent to the ever-growing number of lives lost to gun violence.

The next time a mass shooting occurs, Republicans should pray for forgiveness, for not only their complacency and dereliction of duty, but in contrition for the men, women and children we continue to lay to rest because of senseless gun violence and our cowardly inaction. You can watch my floor speech here.

Trenton Makes. The World Takes.

About a year ago, I was on a Congressional Delegation in Seattle where I had the opportunity to visit  Starbucks’ headquarters. While I was there, I mentioned to every person I interacted with, including Howard Schultz, (then CEO of Starbucks) how New Jersey’s capital city didn’t have a Starbucks. Earlier this month, Trenton did not just welcome a run-of-the-mill Starbucks, but a specialized facility that is going to invest in our community and help build the future. Young men and women will be able to work there and be provided with management training to go off into other areas of our state and country and run their own stores.

Trump's Accusers Deserve To Be Heard

I joined Carol Costello to discuss how the nearly 20 women who have accused President Trump of sexual harassment deserve to be heard. We cannot let the inexcusable become the standard. As a member of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee, I believe we have a duty to fully investigate any wrong doings of government officials — that includes Trump and the serious allegations against him. This committee is supposed to be the premier investigative committee in the House of Representatives — yet Republicans refuse to act. What are we waiting on?

2018 Is Our Year

I was overjoyed  that the people of Alabama, in particular black women, chose someone to represent them who could do so with honor and dignity. Doug Jones was duly elected to represent the people of Alabama, and I believed that he rightfully needed to be sworn in and seated before Republicans rammed their tax bill through Congress. I led a letter amongst the women of the Congressional Black Caucus urging the Alabama Secretary of State to do so. Unfortunately, this has still not happened, and we are seeing false cries of voter fraud occurring. Even though Black Alabamians had to overcome systematic voter suppression to vote in the first place, we are seeing attempts to strip their votes away.

Doug Jones being elected Senator of Alabama proves that there is a movement in this country to reclaim our democracy to end the chaos that Trump and Republicans are unleashing. The 2018 fight will not be easy, but it is necessary in order to save this country and redirect this country on a path towards justice once again. I will be right there with you in this fight and am doing all within my power in Congress to speak truth to power and bring the positive change that is so desperately needed. I know for certain though that this is not possible without you.
